BBC Breakfast’s rich list revealed – from Dan Walker’s exceptional move to soaring meteorologist Owain

HOUSEWIVES favorite Dan Walker has announced a shock move to Channel 5 – and with it, a rumored bumper pay rise.

The BBC Breakfast host said in a video on Twitter that he would be presenting “a host of new programs across the channel”.

The Strictly star and dad-of-two will replace Channel 5 news presenter Sian Williams, who recently announced her departure and who herself moved from BBC Breakfast to Channel 5 in 2016.

Dan said: “It was a massive decision because I love BBC Breakfast. But Channel 5 came in with big ambitions, with big plans and I don’t think opportunities like this come around very often. “

But how does Dan’s salary — and potential future earnings — compare to those of his fellow breakfast stars? We take a look.

Clean and devoutly religious – he refused to rehearse for Strictly on a Sunday – Dan Walker has been a hit since he took his place on the famous red sofa in 2016.

He was the biggest breakfast earner last year, according to the BBC’s annual list of their biggest stars, with £295,000. This figure included his time at Football Focus, which he left last May after 12 years, as well as regular presentation slots on the match of the day and the final score.

He also won around £60,000 to get to the Strictly quarter-finals Last year.

However, his move to Channel 5 could potentially see Dan double his salary, to over £500,000, particularly because he won’t be bound by strict BBC rules preventing him from doing adverts and endorsements.

Popular culture expert Nick Ede said: “Dan Walker leaving the BBC is a clear indication that his star is on the rise and he wants to maximize his earning power.

“It’s a smart move on Channel 5’s part to grab the housewives favorite and make him their flagship presenter.

“With a crowded news channel war going on with GB News, Sky News, TalkTV etc, this is a great way for Channel 5 to engage with a new audience. Plus their existing audience will love its your authoritative and approachable.

“He will probably be invited to present other programs on the channel, in addition he will be able to do commercials and branded commercial activities, which means he could earn around £500,000.

Naga Munchetty – £255,000

According to BBC figures from last July, which listed salaries above £150,000, Naga earned £255,000 in the 2020/2021 financial year.

This put her second in earning at Breakfast and £40,000 behind Dan, and jumped £60,000 from the previous year.

This figure would only include the first four months of Emma Barnett’s BBC Radio 5 Live morning show takeover. Next year’s figure will therefore be higher.

Naga is on 5 Live from Monday to Wednesday and on Breakfast from Thursday to Saturday, alongside Charlie Stayt.

She already added to her coffers by appearing on Strictly, in 2016. She was rejected in week four and would therefore have brought in around £40,000.

Naga also appeared on the CBBC sketch show, Class Dismissed, and co-presented Britain’s Class Heroes in 2017.

Sally Nugent – £250,000 (potential)

Sally Nugent didn’t make the list of top earners last year, but those numbers were released before she was promoted to the main role. weekday anchor, replacing Louise Minchin.

Next year’s numbers are sure to be very different as Sally’s salary increases to compare to Naga and Dan’s salaries.

Sally has proven to be an extremely popular addition to the show, having risen through the ranks of sportscaster.

In 2020, she responded to a search by a Twitter user who suggested she earned more than the Chancellor.

She replied: “I guarantee you the Chancellor earns more than me, just saying ‘

Rishi Sunak earns £79,000 as his base salary, plus an additional £71,000 as chancellor.

Nick said Sally would likely earn an extra £150,000 on top of her previous salary to become a regular anchor.

Charlie Stayt – £190,000

Charlie has been a mainstay of Breakfast since 2006, working first as a relief presenter before becoming the regular Friday-Sunday host the following December.

He currently hosts the Thursday-Sunday show alongside Naga, and also fills in for Dan Walker on weekdays whenever needed, earning £195,000 in the process.

Past endeavors have included appearances on Dictionary Corner on Channel 4’s Countdown, the BBC’s teatime quiz show Pointless Celebrities and Saturday Kitchen.

The father of two has been married to his wife Anne for 27 years.

The beautiful Louise left the program in September, but she raked in a pretty penny beforehand, with a salary of £185,000.

Last year she also boosted her earnings with her stint on I’m a Celebrity, for which she would have likely earned over £30,000 for battling creatures and sleeping in the cold Welsh castle.

Now that she is free from BBC rules, the sky is the limit for Louise.

Louise, a mum-of-two, has previously appeared on quiz shows like Celebrity Chase and House of Games. She might also be dipping her toe into more reality shows.

As one of the few Breakfast stars not to appear on Strictly, the bookmakers have put her at 2/1 to appear in the next series, especially after her husband lifted his ‘lifetime ban’ .

She said last year: “The other day on Breakfast Dan (Walker) mentioned it and I said the line that I’ve been saying for many years that I’m banned for life from my family and my husband texted and said, ‘Ban lifted.'”

Popular weathercaster Carol Kirkwood didn’t make the BBC’s list of top earners, but she sure isn’t far behind.

The National Treasury has been telling us about Breakfast forecasts since 1998.

She has also lent her expertise to programs across the Channel including the Victoria Derbyshire show and The One Show.

As is the tradition of Breakfast presenters, Carol took to the Strictly Ballroom in 2015, partnered with Pasha Kovalev.

She’s also dipped her toe in other programs including Ready, Steady, Cook, Pointless Celebrities and a documentary called The Great British Weather.

Nick Ede reckons that if Carol were given further shows on the BBC she would have the potential to earn around £180,000.

He’s best known for trying wacky activities – around 400 in fact, which is considered a world record.

The father-of-three appeared on Strictly with professional dancer Katya Jones in 2019, reaching week seven.

He has also appeared on Celebrity University Challenge, The Weakest Link and I Can See Your Voice.

Nick says: “I think the BBC will want to keep Mike, along with everyone else, so they will offer him other roles, like hosting radio shows, podcasts, being contestants or pundits on existing shows.

“All of this can add substantial increases in revenue and revenue.

“Mike could potentially make up to £200,000 this way.”

Owain actually started at 18 on S4C.

Owain said, “My life has been a bit of a whirlwind since my drumathon, but S4C viewers with long memories will know that it took me a while to become an ‘overnight sensation’.”

Nick reckons this is just the start for Owain and suggests he could potentially see his income soar to £200,000.
