Dominique Kelley on choreography for Mariah and the power of dance

Dominique Kelley is the model of OutThe July/August Beauty section on radiance treatments. Below, he shares some tips from his own diet as well as highlights from his work as a top choreographer.

What is your routine for healthy skin?
My routine for healthy skin always revolves around exfoliation and a top notch cleanser. I really like charcoal masks that can be applied to dry or damp skin to completely cleanse my skin. Next is a spray toner to wake up the skin and make me feel like a celebrity (who wouldn’t want that?). Plus, water, not coffee, genetics, clear sunscreen, and being genuinely happy helps combat the effects of skin damage and premature aging.

What sparked your love of choreography?
My love for choreography started when I was around 10 years old. I remember making up dances for my neighbors and cousins at family events. I would also re-choreograph my dance solos on location. Sorry for my old dance teachers!

What project are you particularly proud of?
I am particularly proud of two projects. One was the all-black musical theater version of Oklahoma! at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. It was transcendent, groundbreaking, and I hope something finds its legs again so the world can see the magic we’ve created as a company. The other project was to choreograph for Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special for Apple TV. Besides being a living icon, this special warmed hearts around the world during one of the darkest times in history, dahling.

What do you think is the power of dance to advance equality?
The power of dance is still present thanks to social media, dancers considered superstars and [consequentally the] cultural paradigm shifts. From watching our favorite celebrities dance with a same-sex partner on reality TV, to Black
TikTok creators are known for their influence, for watching disabled and neurodivergent people shine in dance atmospheres, [we see] the power of dance and visibility. @domkelley
