Out & About: Animal Friends of Westmoreland Hosts Dance Party, Reveals New Name

Things got a little rowdy at Dancing with the celebritieshosted Friday night by Animal Friends of Westmoreland at the Palace Theater in Greensburg.

There were boos and cat calls from members of the public unhappy with some of the judges’ scores.

After intermission, Master of Ceremonies and AFW Executive Director Kelly Brisbane asked, “Are you tired of the free wine and beer?”

A conspicuously minor voice responded with a loud “No!” »

It was a lot of fun, however, as nine dance duos strutted through the annual competition which raises money for the Youngwood-based animal rescue and adoption organization which also has a large animal sanctuary in Unity. .

Celebrity dancers – representing business, education, healthcare, nonprofits and government – were paired with dance teachers for performances in a variety of dance styles, from ballroom to tango via hip hop.

At stake was first, second and third place in the jury and public prizes.

The name change is designed to avoid confusion with the Pittsburgh-area organization of the same name, Animal Friends, and to reflect the healing properties that interacting with animals can bring to human lives.

It also reflects the will of the founder and president of the AFW Valentino candy to expand the reach of the organization beyond Westmoreland County.
